Five tricks to save water in your office building instead of wasting it

If you run an office building you must waste a lot of water on a yearly basis due to a number of different things, so we're going to look at some tricks you can use to turn things around.

Check for leaks

There is a good chance you'd notice leaks in your house because it's your castle, but in your office building it's different because you're concentrating more on the actual work you produce every day so you tend not to concern yourself with the small things. If you do have a lot of leaks you will waste a lot of water every year, so it makes sense to spend a little time going around every now and again looking for them so you can deal with any problems straight away.

Flushing the toilet

Toilets get used multiple times during the day and every time they're flushed lots of water is wasted, so maybe there is something you can do about it. I'm not going to say you should replace your regular toilets with low-flow ones because unless you're a massive company you won't be able to justify the cost, but there is still something you can do. Just stick bottles filled with sand in the tank at the back of each toilet and it won't fill up as much which means less water will be used when the toilet is flushed.

Use less energy

This will depend on the type of environment you work in and the equipment you use, but you'll find certain pieces of equipment need to be kept cool which is why using more energy will require the use of more water. If you can find a way to conserve energy it will mean less water is needed and this can cut down the amount you use per month by a large lot. Operational changes and strict conservation can reduce the amount of water used by up to 50%.

Conserve rain water

Any office building is going to have a roof larger than you'll find on a normal house, which means whenever it rains it's going to be hit by a larger amount of water. Instead of directing that water into the sewers you can set up a water management system to save as much of it as possible and it can be used in different ways throughout your office building. You won't be able to drink it, but there are tons of ways you can use rain water effectively instead of letting it go to waste.

Educate your employees

This is maybe the most obvious example of how you can save money, but it might be the most difficult to implement unless your employees realize why wasting so much water is a bad thing. Put up signs telling them to switch off the taps when they're not using them instead of letting them run. Ask them to fill up water bottles at the water cooler to drink from during the day instead of filling up a mug each time they're thirsty. If you employ a lot of people this will always help you save water.
