Plants as home décor: A living, breathing part of your home

Published in Living Green on May 20, 2025

A garden can be indoors as well as outdoors. The vibrancy, earthiness and natural allure of plants can be brought inside with house plants. Having living plants around people makes them calmer and work better. Taking care of plants has been known to assuage traumas and stress thus making sure that we are healthy physically as well as mentally. Indoor plants also counteract the effect of some general pollutants from the air around them.

Today, house plants have become an integral part of interior decorating. Indoor plants are available everywhere. You can buy them online as well, from websites similar to online electronics stores.

House Plants as Home Décor

House plants are a great tool for decorating your home. An automatic sense of homeliness and earthiness is created by their presence. If used and placed intelligently, it can work to make a gargantuan space feel warm and cozy and can make smaller spaces look bigger through the visual illusion of depth. No house would be complete without a few perfectly placed house plants.

Placement

You may find that the place where the house plant looks perfect is not ideal for its growth. This is generally due to a lack of natural light. You could opt for artificial lighting to emulate natural conditions but it is more logical to think of house plants as things which can be moved around. If you have a dark spot in the house which screams for some foliage you can consider the following solution. Buy two house plants. Place one in the spot where it acts as a décor piece and the other on a sunlit windowsill. Every week, switch the plants around in order to make sure that they remain healthy and grow properly. Healthier plants look fresh and give a positive vibe.

Another consideration that you should make is while picking the house plant. If you’re going for flowering house plants, remember that these need more sunlight than green plants. In fact, you cannot place flowering plants in a dark area and they have to be placed in an area where there is sufficient sunlight. Once the flowers start to bloom, you can place them anywhere else but at all other times, they have to be placed in the path of direct sunlight.

Miniature Gardens

Making miniature gardens is a great hobby to have. You can make them in small trays and containers and use a mixture of green as well as flowering plants. You could also use cacti.

It is good to mix and match when making a miniature garden. There are trail and bush plants which can be paired with cacti and up-right plants. If the plants you are using a bit too delicate to be placed in trays and containers, use a glass terrarium. It is advised that you get a deep container in order to allow you to put the plant in without having to remove it from its pot. There is plenty of mulch available to hide the pot and make it look like a seamless design. Miniature gardens are also versatile as dying plants or unremarkable plants can be removed and replaced without affecting the rest of the plants.

Temperature

Most house plants originate from climates where temperatures are similar to the interiors of homes. Most plants find the temperature range of 17 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius as perfect for them and they have no trouble dealing with temperatures shooting up to 32 degrees Celsius. You can purchase a humidity meter and a thermometer from an online electronics store to keep a check over the temperature and humidity around a plant. If your house features central cooling and heating, then the plants will almost always be in moderate temperature. However, if you live in a very hot place with harsh sunlight and either very dry or very humid conditions, you will have to choose your plants wisely. Hot conditions are ideal for cacti and other succulents to grow in.

Plants are a wonderful way of making your home feel more intimate and healthier. A healthy plant has the strange ability to transmit peace and tranquility around.
