Ways to reduce your household plastic usage

Plastic is an unnatural material, which can be practical and useful to some extent, but is quite dangerous to our health. It can pollute the air, water, soil when being produced and burnt. Plastic chemicals can also harm our bodies. Research has shown that the chemicals in plastic can cause cancer, obesity, immune system failure, diabetes, endocrine problems and neurological problems.

There are many ways you can reduce the use of plastic for a healthier household. Here are some of them:

  • Avoid food packaged or stored in plastic containers. The chemicals from the plastic containers can easily mix with the food and the hot drinks that enter your body.

  • Avoid using plastic utensils when you order lunch or dinner. Bring metal ones.

  • Glass, porcelain and steel are much better materials than plastic for bottles, cups and containers. You can also use these items multiple times

  • Buy yourself a stainless steel bottle and bring your drinks in it instead of using disposable plastic bottles and cups.

  • Or, use a vacuum flask, which can also keep your drink at the desired temperature for longer.

  • Instead of placing foods in plastic containers, you can store them in glass jars. It's more healthy and preserves the food better and for longer.

  • When you go to the store, you can take your own cotton shopping bag or bags made of natural materials.

  • Order and get your music online, instead of buying new CDs and DVDs made out of plastic.

  • When you buy yourself new clothes, choose natural fabrics instead of artificial ones like nylon, polyamide, synthetics or other kind.

  • Buy your bread from bakeries, instead of supermarkets, which will pack it in paper bag.

  • Buy bar soaps instead of shower gels. Body washing gels are stored in plastic packages, while most soaps are sold in paper or pasteboard wrappings.

If you decrease the use of plastic items, you will help keep our planet ecologically clean and less toxic for longer. Plastics create a lot of damage by leaving many dangerous chemicals in the air, soil, water, food, plants, animals and humans. Cleaning the Earth from such chemicals is an impossible task. That's why it's important to reduce plastic usage.
