What can you do against global warming?

Published in Living Green on Apr 28, 2025

Global warming threatens us all with the direst of futures. It threatens to reduce our environment from a wonderful place where life can be sustained to hell-hole of increasingly difficult conditions. It is now a well-known fact that global warming is the consequence of our own excesses and that we have, since we were first formed, been working year after year to increase the effects and strength of global warming. Some say that we have already crossed the point of no-return and the damage that we have done cannot be repaired. However, every small step we take can change our environment. Whether it is making our neighbors aware of their actions, better trash practice or even something such as uncovering the truth about the Kangen myth, we all need to take collective positive steps in order to reclaim our environment from our own misdeeds.

Below, are a few steps that we can all take to make the world better and reduce the effects of global warming:

  • Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with those of the compact fluorescent light (CFL)variety. These types of light bulbs consume significantly less amount of energy than traditional light bulbs. This means that you're monthly electricity bill will also be lower. What's more, they do not fuse as they traditional bulbs do, meaning less waste.

  • Whenever possible, use public transport or car pool. Reduce your driving time as much as you can. Once again, you will find that you are not only helping reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are released but also reduce your expenses. If you have to make short trips to the grocery store or somewhere similar, consider bicycling there. It's a great way to burn some calories as well as save the environment.

  • If you use many disposable products, then try to reduce the number of disposable products you use. Instead, move to rechargeable or reusable products. Consider recycling everything that you would generally throw away. Using re-usable products reduces the amount of waste that ends up as landfill.

  • If you absolutely have to drive, make sure that your car is running smoothly and is set up to save as much fuel as possible. Make sure your tires are inflated to the right pressure and avoid driving aggressively. If you accelerate too hard or brake too hard, then you use up more fuel than you normally would.

  • Try to get appliances which are rated and proven to be energy efficient. Most of the energy required in a home is due to heating systems. Cut down on your requirement of hot water every day. Install dishwashers which are rated by EnergyStar ratings.

  • Whenever you're buying a new product, avoid those which come with a lot of packaging. Packaging material is generally pure waste as you do not use it again and is generally made from material which is non-biodegradable. If you do end up buying products which come with a lot of packaging, ensure that you keep the packaging and find some use for it. If you cannot do anything useful with it, try using your creativity to make an art form of some kind.

  • Adjust your thermostat up in summers and down in winters. This is a great and simple way to save energy. Remember to turn off appliances when you're not using them and more important, remember to unplug them. Electronic devices can use a significant amount of phantom power so ensure that you do not spend money on simply plugging your device in.

  • Help make you and everybody around you aware of the environmental problems we face. If you alone in your block is recycling plastic bottles, you may not have a big impact but if you get 50 other people to do it along with you, that is definitely going to have a bigger impact. If those 50 people get another 50 people and so on and so forth, we can definitely move towards a better and cleaner future. You can educate people about anything, fromuncovering the truth about the Kangen myth, to the positives that can achieved from electronics recycling.
